Rachel Chappell
Rachel Chappell is an english photographer who bases her work around flowers. She takes her photos in a macro style in high quality in order for you to see the texture of her flowers. She presents her photos in such a way that it can't be recognised as the flower straight away. She says her first "proper" photo was for a 6th form general studies lesson. She took a photo of some wrought iron gates. Using her aperture she had made the photo focus on the rust of the iron and made the background blurry but not enough so it dominated the photo. She has followed this style of photography throughout her work. Below are some of her examples of her flower photos that are similar to the style of Karl Blossfeldt as they are monochrome and macro and are pictures of flowers and nature. You can find her website here.
Rachel uses macro shots in order to get a full view of the texture of the flower. She focuses on only the flower allowing the background to go blurry but she says this doesn't dominate the photo. She also gets the flower in unique positions to get a more interesting photo. She is different to Karl because she doesn't take the flower and put in in a controlled environment with a white background. She instead take the photo of the flower in its natural habitat. She utilizes the colour to have more of an effect that will catch your eye and draw it to the texture and shapes of the flower.
